According to information that I found on https://www.oakfieldbeams.com/, the three main types of oak beams are:
- English Green oak beamsThese beams are usually light coloured and have a high moisture content. They're commonly used for large oak framing projects and external beams.
- Air dried oak beams These type of beams are the same wood as the English green oak beams but have been naturally dried. This makes them more stable and less prone to settling movement. Air dried beams are darker in colour and more difficult to cut. These types of beams are good for things like fireplace mantles and internal beams.
- Reclaimed oak beamsThese beams are reclaimed from old buildings. Reclaimed beams will often have splits which add character. They are hard, stable, and good for fireplace beams and interior beams.
