Hyperventilation refers to an increased rate and depth of breathing. When a person is hyperventilating, there is an abnormal increase in oxygen and decrease in carbon dioxide, thus causing an imbalance in the blood’s pH levels.

The condition is known as respiratory alkalosis.Hyperventilation is a medical emergency and must be treated promptly. You’ll notice that the affected person is instructed to breathe into a paper bag.

The reason for this is to inhale back the carbon dioxide that was released in order to bring back the blood’s pH to its normal levels. The person is also instructed to calm down and breathe with pursed lips.

However, you can’t use just any paper bag to treat respiratory alkalosis. It’s important to use something that is small enough to cover the mouth, such as this brown Kraft bag.
